2013 #runDisney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run

This was my first time participating in runDisney’s The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend. I was taking advantage of a business trip, so I decided to run both the Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run and 10 Miler – both scheduled for the same day. The 5k would take place at 7:30am at ESPN Zone’s Wide World of Sports Complex and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler would take place at 10:00pm at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
I was staying at Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter in building #3. Race transportation was located right outside the main reception building. The bus ride was a 15 minute ride to the start. Since we were staying at the Sports complex and it was open at 6am, I took advantage of the flush toilets for my pre-race rest stop.
The race began in waves with entertainment from Rudy (Carrissa was racing this morning) and a very entertaining side kick. And just like that, we were off! We were running on grass through the morning dew. It was a refreshing change from asphalt. Once we rounded the field, we turned and began the trail portion of the run. I was excited to run on a trail since we train on trails during Marathon training and they just feel good on the joints. However, I wasn’t quite prepared for the Florida “dirt” – AKA – SAND! The sand made the run more difficult and I clung to the trail sides to prevent unnecessary energy loss.
The character assortment was excellent!. The Big Bad Wolf, Captain Hook, Robin Hood’s King Richard and Little John, Brier Beer and Brier Fox, and Haunted Mansion Grave Diggers were all waiting to pose with runners. The lines were of average length and I took advantage of the opportunity!
There were 2 water stops on course. They were both well manned and stocked by the “as usual” awesome runDisney volunteers!
Soon the race was over and I wanted to get back for breakfast at Grand Floridian and rest…I was running the Tower of Terror 10 Miler later that night!
- Use the Facilities: The flushable kind that is…
- Wear Trail Shoes: I made the mistake of wearing “racers” and could have done with some better tread on my soles for both the grass, stones and sand.
- Stick to the Sides: Be careful on the trails and use the sides of the road for more even terrain.
- Prepare for the Heat: October in Florida can still be humid and it was for this race. By Mile 1 I was dripping. Hydrate – prior to running.
- Pose for Photos: When is the last time you got to pose with The Big Bad Wolf – enjoy it!
