Disney Social Media Moms Celebration – On the Road – Key Takeaways & Tips
On Wednesday, June 5th I had the opportunity to be invited to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration On the Road Conference in New York City. There I would have an opportunity to attend a condensed, half day version of the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration held this past May at Walt Disney World.
Not only was I excited to gain a sneak peek into the World of Disney, but I was excited to learn more about the power of social media, gain insight from motivational speakers, network and finally meet (in person) other bloggers!!!
7:30am: Registration Open/Networking
8:30am – 9:00am: Breakfast Served
9:00am – 9:15am: Opening Remarks, Disney Welcome
9:15am – 10:00am: Keynote Speaker
10:00am – 11:15am: Mompreneur Panel Discussion
11:15am – 12:00pm: Business Session
12:00pm – 12:45pm: Closing Remarks, Networking
I was nervous, yet very excited, about this experience. Twitter was abuzz with other Social Media Moms receiving their invitations and we quickly introduced ourselves and made plans to meet in person.
Didi Marie from DISTherapy shared her Top 5 Takeways from the 2012 Social Media Moms On the Road Celebration and I quickly had business cards made for the conference!
I left Connecticut early and made it to NYC by 7:15am (I didn’t hit traffic at all)! The Doubletree Midtown offered onsite parking for only $25 for the event (quite a deal)!
I arrived early to meet the other invitees and exchange business cards! Outside the ballroom many were already there to begin the day. I soon met Eileen with Mommy Teaches – Diary of a Teacher-Mom and Abby from Abby’s Road to Amazingness .
First up Maria Baily @MomTalkRadio. Maria is the Founder and CEO of BSM Media Maria opened the session, welcomed us to the event and explained the importance of women and how they influence new people to the magic of Disney Resorts and Parks.
Up next Gary B. @Gary_Jerry . Gary works for Disney in PR and Social Media. Gary is FULL OF ENERGY!!!!! Gary shared with us all the exciting events and “Limited Time Magic” at the Disney Parks this summer including:
New Fantasyland, Test Track, Splitsville, and Star Wars Weekend at Walt Disney World. At Disneyland Resort (which I’m excited to check out with my family when we head over to California for runDisney’s Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend) Mickey and the Magical Map, Fantasy Faire and Cars Land and Buena Vista Street! Gary also shared with us the 24-hr Monstrous Summer “All-Nigher” at Walt Disney World in 90 seconds….
Next up was Keynote Speaker, Jenn Labit
@jenniferlabit. Jenn Labit is the founder of Cotton Babies & creator of bumGenius, Flip, and Econobum, worldwide leading cloth diaper brands. Having been a mompreneur with my own business in a previous life, I gained some valuable learnings from her presentation:
- Learn from failure: Be positive if you have negative experiences. Convey the value that those experiences have had in shaping where you are today.
- Use the tools available: Don’t just look at only the moments of success but from the failures as well.
- You can do anything: Don’t let yourself or others put limitations on you and your goals!
Then we were introduced to the Mompreneur Panel. Panelists included founders of the brands Magnificent Babies, Holdon Handles, Bonnie Marcus Collection and Seatpack.
Key Takeaways from the Mompreneur Panel Discussion:
- Have a goal and make it attainable
- Surround yourself with people smarter than you
- Put your pride behind you
- Don’t let fear stop you
From there we had our final presentation of the day from Michelle Stepney @2the9z. Michelle is in charge of Global Content Development for Disney Parks. She reminded us that WE are subject matter experts and provided us some media training tips. My two key takeaways were Stay on Message and Be Confident in Representing Your Brand.
The morning flew by and soon it was time to say good bye, but not before giving out the last prize of the day – a Britax Frontier 90 Booster Seat! Guess who won – ME!!! Unfortunately, my children are now out of boosters so I was happy to pass on my gift and have another name called from the audience. What an awesome prize from one the best car seat manufacturers ever – thank you Britax!!!
My Personal Tips for Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Conference:
- Do some research: Read up on the presenters and panelists so you can ask questions and learn the most from those there willing to help you!
- Don’t be shy: Put on a smile and take the first step and introduce yourself!
- Document the event: Bring your camera, smartphone and something to take notes!
- Remember to relax and have fun: You are here to make contacts (and friends), learn and grow!
