2014 Dopey Challenge – WDW Half Marathon
The 2014 WDW Half Marathon, Day 3 of the Dopey Challenge, was my 5th WDW Half Marathon. I had always run this race coupled with the full marathon as part of the Goofy Challenge. Today, I was running it as part of the Dopey Challenge and 10-days removed from chemo. The plan was to take it easy and save everything for the marathon. I was running with one of my best friends, Nicole, and we were preparing ourselves for a 3-hour marathon with all the character stops.
We were up and out the door at 3am to get to the start line for 4:15am. runDisney was profiling me for their new irunDisney website and wanted me bright and early. I don’t know what was going on with the buses at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort, but we waited 30 minutes in line for a bus. By the time we got to the Epcot’s Explore parking lot, we had to high-tail it the mile walk to the start! We arrived close to 5:15am an hour late!! I did get to see Linda Ambard, Tara Gidus, Ali Vincent and get a last minute pep-talk from my coach, Jeff Galloway!
Nicole and I were soon on our way. We passed Bart Yasso soon after the start! We were having fun, but I was unprepared for my lack of energy. My body didn’t want to run. I just didn’t have any energy. The chemo had taken it away and I was having a very difficult time so we decided just to power walk the race. And walk we did!
We managed to keep our spirits up and just chatted away the miles! We refused to be negative and Nicole was a great sport sticking with me walking.
It is very difficult to walk a half marathon in 3:44 minutes when you are used to run/walking a half marathon in 2:15. Different muscles hurt and your feet are tired. But again, the hardest part is staying positive.
So we made a vow to stay positive and did so by smiling and enjoying the sights around us. We made friends with other runners and just kept moving forward, never looking back! I did look to the left somewhere around Mile 10 when we were on the overpass. I didn’t see the balloon ladies and so I knew we were in the clear to finish the race!
It took us 3:44:26 to finish the 2014 WDW Half Marathon. By far my worst half marathon by to date (my worst was the 2013 Princess Half Marathon – 3:05 and I stopped for every single character stop). But I enjoyed every minute of it because I had my friend with me and we were savoring every mile! I did notice that certain entertainment stops were missing from last year – namely the trumpeters at the Cinderella’s Castle and Mary Poppins at the Grand Floridian. Besides that it was the consistent Walt Disney World Half Marathon that I have grown to love.
