When my cousin, who lives in Ohio, said she was getting married in June, I thought great!  Then I thought to myself, we can combine the trip with a visit to Cedar Point Amusement Park.  Then I thought, let me see if there’s a race happening that weekend.  A quick search later, I found out Cedar Point would be hosting a 5K and a Half Marathon on the same weekend we’d be in Ohio – S-C-O-R-E!!!  Turns out Perfectly Goofy Gail, whose parents live in Ohio, was down for the race as well!

Cedar Point is located on the shores of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio.  The Millennium Force 5K was a timed family fun run which began and finished in the Cedar Point parking lot. The course ran all through the park past its top rides including Gatekeeper, Raptor, Top Thrill Dragster, Millennium Force, and Mean Streak.

The 5K was $35 for early registration and included a Bid and t-shirt.  Children received a “medal” at the finish.  With your race entry you received discounted admission to the park and parking.  The minimum age to participate was 4-years old, however, strollers and wheelchairs were welcomed for both the 5K and 1 Mile fun run.  Proceeds from the Millennium Force 5K went to benefit the Chris Smith Memorial Fund.

Running with Perfectly Goofy Gail and myself were my two children, ages 11 and 8, who jumped at the chance to run in the shadows of some of their favorite roller coasters!  We were having a great time until my 11-year old decided to jump up on a bench and fall over onto her face right before we approached Mile Marker 1.  The crying, and I think embarrassment, of her spectacular fall had us walking most of mile 2.  But there was no need for panic, because this run celebrated and supported runners and walkers alike.  Even though we were walking, we were not alone nor any where near last!

The 3.1 miles flew by quickly and we were soon out of the park through the finish line in 52:35 with a 16:58 pace!  Not bad for 2 40+ year olds with 2 children in tow!  We grabbed our bagels, Powerade, water and oranges and raced back to the hotel to quickly ride some rides before going to Cousin Shelly’s wedding in the evening.
