Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend was the 1st runDisney weekend. It remains the biggest and the premier weekend of the runDisney series. What began as “just a marathon” has morphed into a 5-day event with expo, Kids Races, Diaper Dash, 5K, 10k, Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Goofy and Dopey Challenge events.
2015 was my 7th year running WDW Marathon weekend – 7th WDW Marathon, 6th Goofy Challenge and 2nd Dopey Challenge. But what made this 2015 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend extra special was the celebration of Perfectly Goofy Gail earning her 10th Goofy Challenge. More on that later….
The WDW 5K experienced some minor changes this year. The start zone began out in Explore Lot at Epcot. As usual the start was at 6:15am, but there was a 5-minute wait between corral starts. The added time really helped with dispersing the runners throughout the course. I believe runners from Corral A were finishing while the later corrals were just starting. The extra wait time in the corrals normally wouldn’t have been such a big deal except the temperature was in the 30’s. Of course even though I’m from the Northeast, and can outfit a girl’s cross-country team in workout gear, I only packed costumes and nothing practical for running. Thank goodness #PhotoBombBecca had custom “I’m With Perfectly Goofy Gail” jackets made for the weekend. The jackets with our Mickey Milers tech shirts were our costumes instead of our played Chip & Dale costumes due to the frigid temps.
This morning we were running with #PhotoBombBecca and Perfectly Goofy Gail’s parents, Kay and Mike. Perfectly Goofy Gail had roped, I mean INVITED, many of her friends and family to join in her momentous achievement. Unfortunately for Kay and Mike this meant running a 5K in 30-degree weather at 6 am. This would be Kay and Mike’s first 5K…hopefully NOT their last.
To help add to the excitement of the 1st race of the weekend, there was a vicious rumor circulating social media concerning the Dopey Challenge 16-minute pacing requirement. Even though the 16-minute pacing requirement had never been enforced for a WDW 5K it was questioned whether or not Dopey Challenge participants needed to maintain the pace for the 1st race of the weekend. So instead of waiting in the very long character lines, we decided not to risk disqualification and keep moving forward. We made our own character stops. Unfortunately for us, it was just a rumor confirmed at the Dopey Challenge tent.
The course ventured onto paths in front of Journey to Imagination, The Land Pavilion and The Living Seas with Nemo and Friends to make up the millage lost from the parking lot. I enjoyed the change of scenery and the lost of parking lot millage. Another change was the location of Race Retreat. I noticed it was closer to the finish line. I haven’t seen a personal need for Race Retreat since 2009, but it’s proximity to the finish seems like an improvement. All in all a good start to the race weekend and the completion of 3.1 of 48.6.
