Race Report: 2015 runDisney Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge, Day 3 – WDW Half Marathon
Early registration for Disney Vacation Club Members and Annual Passholders for the 2016 Walt Disney World Marathon opens Tuesday, April 14, 2015, Noon EST. General registration opens Tuesday, April 28, 2015, Noon EST.
The 3rd race of the 2015 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend and Dopey Challenge was the WDW Half Marathon. It was also the 1st race of the Goofy Challenge. Perfectly Goofy Gail would be running her 10th Goofy Challenge. There were 141 Perfectly Goofy runners who had completed every Walt Disney World Half Marathon and Full Marathon since January 2005. runDisney had celebrated this achievement with their names listed in the Official Event Guide (Page 37), a Goofy Tech Shirt and a plaque.
The start of both the WDW Half and WDW Marathon share the same start and finish – the Explore Lot at Epcot. Although we were staying on site, we chose to drive to Epcot and sit in the car as long as possible since it was still chilly at 4am. Running was Perfectly Goofy Gail, #PhotoBombBecca and Little Melissa. Note: Day 3 of the Dopey Challenge is when getting up a 3am starts to loose its appeal in the worst way (it gets really ugly by the 10K of the runDisney Disneyland race weekend…but more on that later).
There were 16 corrals for the Walt Disney World Half and Full marathons – A to P. Since we were running the Dopey Challenge (includes the Goofy Challenge), our corral placement was determined by our full marathon time. I was placed in “J” and Perfectly Goofy Gail was placed in “H.” Those in a higher corral can always move back to a lower corral, but not vice versa, therefore PGG would be moving back to start with me.
The start of the WDW Half was at 5:30am. Knowing we would have a mile walk to the corrals and at least a half hour wait until our start, we took our time getting to the corrals. We arrived in plenty of time and soon were off.
We had a great time on course – please take a minute to view the video . NOTE: Music choice is a favorite of Little Melissa. We stopped for the characters, our favorite Magic Kingdom camera spots and snaps with friends. I was having such a good time, I had it in my mind we were running the full marathon until somewhere between miles 8 & 9 I was set straight by PGG. Nothing puts a spring in your step than finding out you aren’t running 26.2 miles….at least not now.
Soon it was over – in our normal 3 hour runDisney Half Marathon finish time 😉 It’s amazing how fast 13.1 miles can seem to fly when you are having a grand time with friends. Now it was time to rest and refuel for the final race of the weekend. We wouldn’t even be halfway through the Dopey Challenge until mile 1.9 of the WDW Marathon….
Did you run the 2015 WDW Half Marathon? Are you planning on running in 2016?
