Race Report: 2015 runDisney Inaugural Rebel Challenge – Star Wars Half Marathon

Early registration for Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members for the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend will open on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 EST.  General registration for the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend will open June 16, 2015.1200The 3rd race of the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend and the 2nd of the Rebel Challenge was the Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon.  The start time was once again at 5:30am and located on Disneyland Drive, near Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.  Running today was Perfectly Goofy Gail and I dressed as #TinkTroopers.  A nod and acknowledgement to the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend being booted to May and Mother’s Day Weekend 🙂

1166Right from the start, we had a ball running!  I do believe it was the channeling of Tinker Bell’s sassy personality.  We were too into our character, ourselves, and behaving like lunatics to NOT have fun.  Thank goodness for us, the weather was perfect for wigs, wings and stormtrooper gear.  We entered Disneyland Park through the north entrance.  Unfortunately for us, we couldn’t see a thing since our glasses were fogging up something fierce.  Luckily, we had loads of time to cool off in the long line for Luke & Princess Leia…

1192The plan was to stop for photos with characters we hadn’t seen before like a Gamorrean and some we had like the Stormtroopers.

1199The time in the park was short and by mile 4.25 we were out on Harbor Boulevard.   Runners were already returning and heading for home while we were still on mile 5.  1217Miles 4.25 to 7 had cheerleaders and bands, but the miles were mostly meh for entertainment.  Things on the course didn’t begin to get exciting until we hit the cosplayer’s.  The 501st Legion came out to support the marathon.  And the 501st Legion MADE the Star Wars Half Marathon.  The 501st came out to entertain, pose for photos and cheer the runners on through the race.  They were outstanding.  OUTSTANDING.

1258Again, miles 10, 11, 12 were just miles through the City of Anaheim.  It was flat.  It was fine.  Meh.  At Mile 12 we were right outside the park and the crowd was picking up.  Runners who had already finished were cheering us on to the finish.  Waiting to bring us into the finish were the Disney Characters (FINALLY) in their Star Wars costumes!

1283Star Wars is a great theme.  It was a good 1st race just like I would expect from runDisney, however I would suggest additional Star Wars/Disney Star Wars characters in the parks and addition entertainment for the Anaheim Streets.  All in all, it was a good inaugural event and I would recommend a second running.

Did you run the Inaugural Rebel Challenge?  Are you running again in 2016?
